Dr. Afiat received her M.D. from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in Omaha in 2000. She did her residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota from 2001-2004 after a transitional internship at HCMC in Minneapolis. In 2005, Dr. Afiat became the Chief and Medical Director of the Department of Ophthalmology at Hennepin County Medical Center and Hennepin Faculty Associates. She became Board Certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2006. In 2009, Dr. Afiat completed her fellowship in Cornea, External Disease and Complex Cataract Surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, United Kingdom.
Dr. Afiat served as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota from 2004 - 2017 teaching cataract surgery to University of Minnesota Ophthalmology residents at HCMC and the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis. She was awarded the Krachmer Surgical Teacher of the Year Award in 2010 - 2011.
In our clinic, Dr. Afiat sees and treats a full range of eye conditions in addition to her specialization in diseases of the cornea. She brings this expertise to her surgery practice where she performs corneal transplants and complex cataract surgery. Dr. Afiat also performs iStent surgery, the implantation of a microscopic device in the drainage system of the eye, which aids in the lowering of eye pressure in glaucoma patients. Dr. Afiat is Board Certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
Dr. Afiat lives in St. Paul with her husband and daughter. She enjoys traveling, art, gardening and cooking with her family.
